Angbao for Mom

The Chinese New Year or Spring Festival as it’s been called since the 20th century, remains the most important social and economic holiday in China. Originally tied to the lunar-solar Chinese calendar, the holiday was a time to honor household and heavenly deities as well as ancestors. It was also a time to bring family together for feasting.

This year I decided to create a custom-made angbao for my mom. Giving red envelops or Angbao is a custom at Chinese New Year. Red envelopes always contain money in China, and are given, most commonly, to kids from their parents, grandparents, and others as Chinese New Year gifts.

Instead of sticking to basic chinese red envelope designs, I try to mix along new colours with the classical symbols to create a more contemporary look for the angbaos.
